APD Arrest Repeat DWI Offender After Causing Violent Crash
Albuquerque Police have arrested a 25-year-old man with a history of intoxicated driving offenses after he caused yet another serious crash on Sunday near the intersection of Coors Bypass and Ellison Drive. Police said a white Ford van traveling southbound on Coors at a high rate of speed ran the red light, crashing into a white Honda traveling westbound on Ellison, causing it to flip multiple times. The driver sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
An officer speaking with the van driver noticed his slurred speech and a strong odor of an alcohol. The driver initially hesitated to consent to a sobriety test, stating he had a medical condition involving bolts in his leg and foot, which he only revealed when asked to perform the tests. When officers offered alternative tests that did not involve walking or balancing, the driver repeatedly interrupted, blaming faulty brakes for the crash.
After some debate, the driver eventually agreed to be tested but despite clear instructions, he performed poorly. He was taken into custody at the scene and arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) resulting in Great Bodily Harm. He has a history of repeat offenses dating back five years, which includes:
- March 7, 2020: Charged with multiple DWI-related offenses, including Driving While Under the Influence of Liquor and/or Drugs (.08 or Above) (1st Offense), Negligent Use of a Deadly Weapon (Intoxication), Driving Without a License, Driving While License Suspended, and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marijuana).Â
- July 15, 2020: Under a Plea Agreement, he pleaded guilty to the DWI charge, and the remaining counts were dismissed by the prosecutor.
- July 11, 2025: Accepted a plea deal to attend Court-Ordered Driver Improvement School and pleaded guilty to Speeding (Over by 21–25 mph), and the accompanying charge was dismissed as part of the agreement.Â
- October 7, 2025: A bench warrant was issued for Failure to Attend Court-Ordered Driver Improvement School.
